DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) – Saturday may have been Kentucky Derby day, but horses weren’t the only animals to racing to the finish line.

The Oregon District’s Dachshund Dash also happened on Saturday afternoon.

The pups took off for the third annual race in the Oregon District.

This year they took off from Pine St. since the event overgrew the original course on Clay St.

The free event was sponsored by Channel 99.9 FM and local non-profit Wagtown.

Pups and guests got to participate in the first annual Hot Dog Eating Contest, watch the dog parade, where all dogs were welcomed, especially in costume, and finally, watch the Weiner dog contestants race for first prize.

Wagtwon founder and CEO Beth Miller said the Derby Dash is a way for people to make connections.

“it is inspiring, great for the economy, and ultimately leads to more responsible dog ownership behaviors,” she said.
