Everyone's a winner at Woofstock: Annual event benefits Aiken County Animal Shelter

The seventh annual Woofstock on Saturday was a parade of pooches as animal lovers convened on Citizen’s Park to raise money for FOTAS.

Friends of the Aiken County Animal Shelter held the event, which included a trick contest, a pet/owner lookalike contest and puppy races, to help support the Aiken County Animal Shelter and its programs.

Each canine contestant got to take a photo inside a mini Wienermobile, which was fitting, as the main event of the afternoon was the Doxie Derby, held the same day as the Kentucky Derby.

Dachshunds of all ages raced down a track to their owners to win treats and bragging rights.

Face painting, balloon animals, vendors and treats (for both dogs and humans) were also available at the event.

Ellie Joos, chairperson of Woofstock and secretary on the FOTAS board, said the event used to be held at the shelter, but eventually outgrew it.

Joos said people enjoy the event because it’s fun and because they’re animal lovers.

“My favorite part is just seeing all the enthusiasm – all the dog lovers; I love seeing all the dogs that come out for this,” she said.

“I mean it’s just wonderful to be a part of the community that supports what the Aiken County Animal Shelter does.”

Joos said the difference in the shelter since she started volunteering five years ago and now is “amazing,” and the save rate, which is now over 90 percent, is “phenomenal.”

Heather Steinbeck’s dachshund Ellie won the race she ran in.

Steinbeck said she came to Woofstock last year for the first time and decided to come back this year to enter 2-year-old Ellie into the race.

“I just think it’s wonderful, it’s for every type of dog, which I think is lovely, everybody’s welcome, it’s just so dog friendly,” Steinbeck said.

“Just like this whole town is dog friendly, that’s what I love.”
