Dachshunds compete in race at Lake Compounce

SOUTHINGTON — Dozens of dachshunds gathered to compete in the 5th annual Pink’s Wiener Dog 100 Race at Lake Compounce Saturday.

The Connecticut Dachshund Rescue and Pet Services organization partnered with with Pink’s Hot Dogs for the event. Pink’s celebrated the grand opening of a hot dog stand at Lake Compounce in Bristol.

Sarah Chevett, 26, said she has been training her dog Sophie for the competition.

“We have a slight obsession with wiener dogs,” said Chevett. “The fact that we’re going to get a hundred of them in one (place) was pretty great.”

Chevett loves to get Sophie out and socialize with other dogs because she doesn’t really have anyone else she can go play with.

Owners held their dogs in place at the starting line, then at the end of the countdown they were off. Several dogs strayed away from the course, running toward the crowd in search of their owners.

Justine Bauer said it was her second year competing with her dog Leia.

“I just thought it would be fun and we like to support the dachshund rescue,” said Bauer.

In addition to the dog races, the event featured hot dog eating contests and wiener dog fashion shows.

Dogs race to be the “Fastest Hot Dog.” The winners where placed on Olympic-style pedestals and received first-, second- and third-place medals.

Liz Conner, 57, said it was her dog’s first year competing in the race. She said her Oliver is a rescue dog and she’s had him for a year.

“It’s awesome,” said Conner. “They’re so chill. When we take them to the dog park there are all these different kinds of breeds and it’s really sketchy. But its really cute with all these dogs here.”
