Dachshund with collapsing trachea

Our dachshund Booger has recently been diagnosed with a collapsing trachea. I’ve done a lot of research on it and put this here in case others are wondering what is happening with their dogs. This is most common in small/toy breeds, usually in yorkies. The cough is described as a honking sound and some I’ve seen on here are, but Booger’s isn’t so wanted to share. He is on medication and hopefully won’t progress quickly.

  1. I don’t have any experience with pet insurance. I hope your dog is ok. Booger is doing alright. The coughing is fairly well controlled with prednisone every other day now. I hate to keep him on it but don’t really have a choice. His last x-ray was much improved. He feels fine and plays like his normal crazy self. It’s so hard to watch him cough though, I know it scares him.
    And thanks mikaltch. 🙂

  2. Steroids can help some to reduce swelling. We also use strong cough suppressants to decrease irritation. I don’t think anything does a great job. Booger is hanging in there though still ruling the roost after several years.

  3. My dog does the same thing and it can be pretty scary! We’ve not got a diagnosis yet but he’s a terrier and I know it is most common in terriers (although he is not a toy breed). What I do to help him is stroke his throat as if i’m trying to get him to swallow something and he seems to stop making the choking noises after a little while. 🙂

  4. Thanks for the upload. I’ve just had a lecture on tracheal collapse and I was trying to find a video of what a honking cough would sound like so i could be familiar. Wish Booger all the best and may he get better

  5. There is another video that sounds more like what my dog was doing the other night. It scared me really bad. It sounded like she was fighting to breath. She was standing up in a kind of in a shocked pose. She either couldn’t breath or something was caught at the back of the throat. I was too disoriented and shocked to grab my phone to record, but if we experience it again; I will try to do so. Spoke w/my vet & she mentioned it could be a collasped trachea. I have VPI pet insurance coverage. GL

  6. My chihuahua have this too. The first time I heard her done it, I was scared and It was gone for seconds. We didn’t had her check up on a vet ever since. Since we thought it was maybe her nature. Then her puppies had this too after maybe a month after they’re born. Then I saw this video today. I’ll try to talk it with my parents and go to a vet. 😀

  7. This is hard to watch. My Weener dog had it for months..til she just couldn’t handle it anymore and she died in my arms…saddest thing I ever had to do. I had her for 14 years.

  8. my dog has a werid couch kinda sounds like honking or like a goose sound. we are very worried. we are taking him to the vet soon. i hope its nothing serious. i dont know how we will be able to pay for any expensive treatment. my mom and i get ssi and so economically we arent prepared. is there any type of insurrance for dogs? that anybody knows of?

  9. My little Pom, Jimi, was diagnosed yesterday, X-rays show a collapsing trachea. He was making a honking cough as if he was trying to expel something stuck in the back of his throat. He is on a diet, and a gentle fitness regime, but I am going to wait on the steroid medication. My vet said being a few pounds overweight was probably the biggest aggravator. Wish us luck!

  10. My vet said to just try to calm Jimi down when he gets excited, so, like you…I stroke his throat until he can breathe again.
