Annual Wiener Dog Race seeks entries

Lots of dog-gone fun is planned during the annual Wiener Dog Race.

Often referred to as the Dogtona 400, the Children’s Museum of Eastern Oregon is seeking dachshund owners to enter the fundraising event. In its 12th year, the Wiener Dog Race is Friday, June 22 beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the 400 block of Main Street in downtown Pendleton. The fun tunes up with family-friendly activities, including a bounce house, fire truck climb, a silent auction and a crafts table.

The event shifts into second gear at 5 p.m. with introductions, an all-breed costume contest and dachshund practice runs. The excitement revs up at 5:15 p.m. with racing heats.

The entry fee for participating pooches is $20 for dachshunds registered by Thursday, June 21. Race day entries are $25.

Prize packages will be awarded to the top three dogs. The winning wiener will be one of six dachshunds who will qualify to run in the Northwest Championship Wiener Dog Race. The televised event attracts racers and spectators from across Oregon, Washington and Montana. It is held during the Mt. Angel Oktoberfest in September.

And, be sure to stick around after the racing for a dance and entertainment at 6 p.m. with Mo Phillips & the Thunder Bubbles.

Also, happening on race day is the Pendleton Farmers’ Market, which runs from 4 p.m. to dusk in the 300 block of Main Street. Then, the fun continues at 7:45 p.m. with a kickoff concert for the Main Street Block Party Series, which features a beer garden, food and music by Orquestra Pacifico Tropical.

The Children’s Museum of Eastern Oregon began in 1996 with a goal of providing kids of all ages with opportunities for educational exploration and development through interactive exhibits and play. It’s open Tuesday through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 400 S. Main St., Pendleton.

For entry forms or to register as an event sponsor, call 541-276-1066, stop by the children’s museum or visit www.cmeo.org.
