Woman mauled to death … by dachshunds!?
By the way, I don’t begrudge you distrust of rotties, and I’m not trying to convince you otherwise. It’s a reasonable default position so far as I’m concerned.
Distrust of any dog one is not intimately familiar with is always reasonable. One never knows what their temperament is, or how well-trained they are.
When I was younger, our family owned a Rottweiler. He was purebred, from an AKC line, but 1 inch too tall to meet standards, topped out at 158 pounds full grown (bigger than me at the time). He was very well-trained, and the biggest drama queen you would have ever met. If he’d been human, he’d have been Goth. Very friendly and tolerant dog, and scared to death of cats (got repeatedly beat up by a barn cat when he was a still a puppy/adolescent, even though he was something like 4 times her size at the time).
He rarely ever barked at strangers. What he would do is stand stock still, "on point", and at worst let out a deep, rumbling growl if they did not seem to belong there. Never attacked anyone, but I would not have wanted to be on the wrong end of that growl if I had bad intentions. When it came to people who were clearly allowed on the property, he was a slobbery attention whore who loved making new friends.
The only dog I’ve ever been attacked and bittn by was a neighbor’s Cocker Spaniel, who attacked me in my own yard for no reason I was able to discern. Dog was a complete psycho. Fortunately it didn’t do any damage (aside from a small bruise), and one good kick sent it running.
