Spinner, our adorable and mischievous Dachshund used to wake up in the wee early ours of the mornings, on garbage pickup days, back in the old days when garbage cans were smaller and made of plastic or sometimes, shiny metal..He would sneak out the cat’s trap door and roam the neighborhood, sniffing around while knocking people’s garbage to the side, tearing up the trash bags and helping himself to discarded food, left overs. One day, a neighbor who was tired of picking up the mess and hearing complaints from the sanitation workers decided to stay vigilant all night long so as to catch the culprit. …..Sure enough, around 4 am, out comes Spinner, undetected and sneaking out the cat door that you see in this video, heading for his usual round about in the neighborhood, to do his deed. Yes, you guess it, he was caught red handed!
Needless to say an angry / victim neighbor knocked on our door the following day to complain….My wife and I, we were shocked to learn what Spinner had been doing all alone. We knew some type of animal was doing this , causing terror by tearing up and scattering people’s garbage routinely for months now but we never suspected our own little Spinner! No wonder he turned his dog food down Tuesdays and Fridays, no wonder he had put on some weight! My God, how embarrassing…..Mystery solved ! ….Now, make sure I don’t forget to use the trap door locking mechanism twice a week only to wake up to his body slamming against it, you guessed, around 4 am…..
Our Spinner was so cunning, such a rascal. He is gone now, passed away at the ripe old age of 13. We’ll always miss him 🙁
This story, I’ll never forget and will always bring a smile to my face, every time I see this video clip you see above, shot many years later, by then, my Spinner, fat and old but still, struggling to get out reminiscent of the old day when he was the terror of our neighborhood!
