Dachshund History :
The roots of the dachshunds go back to the ancient Egypt, as there were engravings found, featuring short-legged hunting dogs. The modern Dachshunds were created in Germany as badger dogs. The name “Dachshund” means “badger dog” in German. The early dachshunds were larger, than today’s bread, weighing between 30 to 40 lb(14 to 18 kg) and were used to hunt animal like foxes and deer.

Later the bread was developed to be fearless and tenacious, with the body structure which could enable them to dig into the badger burrows, chase and fight and kill them, if needed. This short legged hunting dog was very good at identifying smells and tracking them. The modern breed is considered to have been developed through cross between Braque, a small French pointing breed and small terrier type dogs. The breed is also considered to have a few elements of German and French hounds.

The Dachshunds with their short and large front paws are able to quickly dig and move briskly inside the tunnel, while chasing their game. Their unusually large barrel-like chest provides them, with an increased lung capacity for stamina while tracking and hunting their prey inside the tunnel. The skin is smooth and loose enough, to avoid any tear while chasing its prey undergrounds.

Today they have evolved as a companion dog breed, but their hunting instincts still exists. They can hunt both above and under the ground.
