Dachshund Swims Like an Otter

See the Dachshund named Seattle swim like an otter, turning 360 degrees in the water. Some may think he is an expert but he is nervous. And of course, with our obsession with political correctness, some have commented here that the doggus is being abused or have used offensive language. In reality, he is learning how to swim, and as you see in the end, he starts to swim normally.

  1. @ballinforda40 my dogs are dashchounds and they can swim fine 😛 but thats probably because there not tottaly pure dashchound and there backs are less curved, there bodies are much more flexible and well built and there there legs are more positioned for running and jumoing ect

  2. Actually Dachshunds can swim. They’re not Frenchies. Mine has been swimming since 8 weeks, loves water, it’s pretty good exercise too or so says my vet.

  3. My doxie sinks like a stone in our pool (I never leave her unsupervised and learned quickly that we have to hold on to her the entire time)… she’s just a non swimmer I guess. YOur dog is great! I have a beagle who is a good swimmer, but the doxie has just no clue! lol

  4. Most dachshunds have a problem with staying upright. It’s too bat Seattle has this problem because he obviously loves to swim. He needs a life jacket.

  5. If he wanted not to drown he would have came out where the cameraperson is. but he turns around and has another go at this.

  6. @7kennypokey my dachshund will swim for hours if given the opportunity. i’ve had to watch him closely since he was 8 weeks old because he will take running leaps into bodies of water. it is his favorite pastime.

  7. @ballinforda408 Mine swims all the time and there are hundreds of youtube vids of dachshunds swimming so I don’t understand why your comment is warranted in terms of the entire breed’s swimming capabilities. I’m sure some can swim and others can’t.

  8. Some dachshunds can swim and others can’t. Dachshunds generally don’t like water, and obviously the breed is not a water breed, but that doesn’t mean they can’t swim. Their build makes it harder, but not impossible, and some dachshunds love to swim. The dog here is obviously not being abused; the person filming him was there the whole time and would not have let the dog drown. Come on, guys.

  9. my dad would throw his car keys in the pool and his dachshund would dive down to the bottem and grab them and then swim back up, they have no problem swimming, mne doesn’t anyways.

  10. As the owner of several dachshunds over many years, all of whom were strong and competent swimmers, I must take exception with those individuals who are stating that dachshunds "can’t" or "shouldn’t" swim. Water is a naturally supportive medium – this is why so many dogs are "rehabilitated" after injury in pools. "Seattle", the dachshund is this video, is clearly comfortable and capable in the water – look at the tail and expression – that’s one happy dog.

  11. or, like an otter, he is instictively ‘inflating’ his coat with air when he rolls 360 degrees; otters do that to keep themselves afloat and insulated from the cold water.

I LOVE the life jacket for my dog! Not only does she swim better but I can carry her around like a suit case! 😀

  13. my wiener dog Fender loves the water. when he goes swimming i make sure to stay close to him so he doesnt get to anxious.

  14. Aw so cute. It’s always good for dachshunds to swim. Because they’re prone to getting overweight which can affect their backs, swimming is an excercise that burns a lot of calories without too much strain on their bodies. I love when my dachshund swims ^_^

  15. what is this crap about doxies cant swin??
ofcourse they can! and swimming is exelet therapy for most animals aswell. its a reason why water therapy is used when animals are hurt i.e. legs broken etc. because its very healty for them. they get to use their muscels without having to put pressure on their bones.

In this case however its seems like the doxie is enjoying itsels, altho it does have some problems keeping upright.

  16. @ballinforda408 the dog weighs less in water than it does on land so why would it have extra stress on its spine? Don’t post "facts" when you have no clue what you’re talking about.

I hate how any video of a pet that isn’t in some protective bubble gets comments like "poor dog" or "oops moment in an owners life." It’s like an overprotective mother x100.

  18. HAhaha, yeah, they surely look like an otter while swimming!
I always call my dachshund "lontrinha"= little otter in portuguese.

  19. i thot ur weenie dog does really well! my two reds hate the water but my choc/tan longhair loves it and did the EXACT same thing his first time in the water…. good job, Seattle! hope u continue to enjoy the water!
