Hundreds of dachshunds to trot into Toowoomba park
WEE little legs will trot into Queens Park tomorrow as part of the Great Australian Dachshund Walk.
The sausage dogs and their devoted owners will participate in the inaugural walk to raise awareness for Devoted to Dachshunds Rescue, one of Australia's leading breed specific rescue organisations.
The walk will also be an attempt to break the Guinness World Record of largest walk of a single breed. That was set in August 2015 in Mexico, with 783 Yorkshire terriers.
Events will run, at the same time, across Australia.
Participants Alanna Jensen-Schubert, along with pups Cyrus and Luna, and Ash Hedges, with Arlo, are excited for Sunday's event.
"It is becoming a popular breed here so we thought we would have the numbers to get some people come," Ms Jensen Schubert said.
She also praised the work of Devoted 2 Dachshunds Rescue, who helped her with the training of her own two dogs.
"It is not only the rescues that the money goes towards, they do help support dogs that suffer illness and suffer from things that people just can't afford. It helps raise money for people to be able to keep their dogs," she said.
While Ms Jensen-Schubert said she knew dachshunds were a popular breed at the moment, she encouraged potential owners to adopt before they shop.
Ms Hedges added dachshunds were a lovely natured breed of dog and she couldn't imagine owning anything else.
The Great Australian Dachshund Walk will be held in the designated leash-free area of Queens Park tomorrow from 10am, for a 10.30am start.
It will also include a bring-your-own picnic and prize-giving.
