Cuterebra larva in a cute kitten. Warning! This is pretty

This cute little stray kitten was brought to us this morning at Shiloh Veterinary Hospital in Kennesaw, GA. When we heard her story and found a large Cuterebra larva growing under her skin, we decided to take her in for adoption. Cuterebra larva, also known as botfly or Wolf Worm, are an occasional finding this time of year in outdoor pets. The larva grow under the skin typically on the neck and shoulder area. Eventually, the larva develops into a large fly which lays more eggs on grass. The eggs hatch into larvae that survive in dewdrops until an animal comes walking by. The larva burrows into the skin completing the cycle. Clients bring the pet in believing there is an abscess developing. With removal, cleaning of the wound, and antibiotics, she will be available for to go to a new home.
