In general, puppies lack the bladder and bowel control of an adult dog. By the time your Dachshund puppy realizes she may need to go to the bathroom, it is just too late.

It is important to note that this breed can be a little sensitive to firmness, so be sure that your Dachshund is not too scared of you when you are training.

The easiest way to train any dog is to make it fun and exciting. Your Dachshund will be reluctant to train again if it is traumatized by the experience. They generally respond better to a variety of different training methods.

Pick a designated spot where your pup will do its business. It should be close by so your pup won’t have to travel far when the urge hits.

Dogs have an incredible sense of smell and once they learn, THIS IS THE SPOT. They will be much more likely to pee or poop on command.

Ideally the place should be protected from the elements. Dachshund are not happy about going outside in the cold, wet environments and this will really make your life difficult, if they refuse to go outside! If you don’t have a spot, be creative to try and keep them warm and dry.

Pick a spot close to the house that is protected from falling rain, or a large tree or bush that gives some protection.

Play it safe and keep them on a leash when taking them outside.

This one little thing will help you immensely to move forward quicker, is to set a potty schedule for your pup or adult dog, that they will become accustomed to following.

Early on it will seem like you are taking your new little friend out constantly, because that is exactly what you need to do.
An 8 to 12 week old puppy has to be taken out almost every HOUR. Other key times to take your puppy out is first thing in the morning, after every meal, or drink of water, sleeping, playing, and always before going to bed.
