Paralyzed Dachshund Walks Again – Before & After

Trace (9-year-old Dachshund) had back surgery following a disc prolapse and his guardians brought him to Cold River Veterinary Center for Dr. Kruesi’s help with post-surgery rehabilitation.

The *Before* footage was taken 3 months after the procedure. At this appointment Dr. Kruesi gave Trace a chiropractic treatment, physical therapy, injections at acupuncture points with a homeopathic and he applied a topical liquid to increase circulation and repair. Trace’s guardians continued the topical treatment at home along with appropriate nutritional supplementation.

The *After* footage was taken 6 weeks following Trace’s first post-surgical rehab visit. At the time this video was taken Trace had received: two chiropractic treatments (including physical therapy), two sets of injections at acupuncture points, at home treatment with a topical liquid and appropriate nutritional supplementation. Trace is a fun dog with a fantastic attitude and it definitely shows in this video!

  1. My dog had the same problem back in 2009. The vet wanted to put him down but we went against it. Within 2 months he was able to use his back legs again and walk fine. Still could not properly control his bladder.

  2. In general a long period of inactivity or strict cage rest is counter-productive for dogs predisposed to back injury. Dogs recovering from disc surgery are in need of a rehabilitation plan for better joint maintenance, to strengthen core muscles, activate their proprioception pathways, and promote axonal regeneration. The American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (www.animalchiropractic.org) provides a directory of certified animal chiropractors that can help prepare a rehabilitation plan and avoid complications from steroids. 3. This is giving me hope! My 9 year old Bichon just had emergency surgery for a slipped lumbar disc. He is only home 2 days, so we are in the learning and coping stage. I am glad you posted that this was 3 months after Trace’s procedure.

  4. our dachshund male 51/2 years old just had surgery for a ruptured disk a week and a half ago, he is resting in his crate, I walk him with the help of a sling but he has not started to walk again yet on his own, he will just drag his legs, hoping that someday he can walk again and this video gives me hope…….Thank You!

  5. Loved your video! Our Dachshund Bella, had back surgery 6.5 weeks ago for IVDD, she is 8 years old, she has just finished strict crate rest but we still are being very cautious with her as she needed to be put back on her prednisone and gaberpentine medicine as she was not just ready to come off them yet, she is walking but needs to build up strength in her rear right back leg, I do see improvement and I believe she will regain that strength and be just fine in a couple of months. She is a fighter and is happy and loves us as much as we love her. I tell my wife often that she has done more for us, then we could ever do for her, she saved us and we owed it to her to give her a shot and get her surgery done, so far so good, I am happy for Trace that he too has amazing parents who love him. God Bless!!!! Any tips on what type of rehab excercises they did with him???
